The book was smaller than I expected, but I believe it has more content than many larger books. Borden certainly did her research, and she added a section at the end where she compares research to being a detective. This is a great way to educate and inspire children intellectually.The story is told with a vocabulary that children can understand while adults will still find it a good read. Borden included quite a number of drawings and photographs by the Rey's .She explains in an epilogue that she didn't write about the Holocaust for several good reasons:1. It had nothing to do with the Rey's journey.2. Very few people who didn't live near the camps actually knew what was going on at that time, and many didn't believe it.3. She wanted children to have a small hint of the danger without writing a take which might give them nightmares.She packs a great deal of information into this small book and I learned about several other books they produced.I enjoyed it greatly.
This is a much smaller format book, more like a thin hardcover novel, compared to the original hardcover of the same book. Content is the same but the size lessens the artistic layout that combines photos, illustrations, and text. Captions and images roll into the binding. I am adding it to a classroom library for individuals to read so it will be fine but if you want the visual impact of a true picture book seek out another edition.
Gave it to my daughter when she was in the hospital after surgery. Great book
Be prepared for a thousand questions from young readers, our grandson asked about travel papers, we discussed passports, he followed the travelers on a map, he was interested in the Reys both from the Curious George books and "The Stars, A New Way To See Them", which is the best astronomy book for kids.
this is a wonderful book and this is a great price. i bought one several years ago - hardback- and it was twice this price. great story too.
