As a beginner at watercolor, I was looking for information on the materials. Such as how to read the paint labels and how paint performs on certain kinds of paper. I wanted to make informed choices, save money and most importantly to save myself some frustration. Scott does not provide any such information. I bought paper of a good reputation and had frustrating results. Online I found out why. A " watercolor bible", a "essential reference" such have more and depth information on such important materials as paint and paper. Better to go online and takes notes.
After taking my first three watercolor classes from an artist I admire, I needed practical instruction! And got it from this little book. There’s a lot to learn and it would be hard to organize so I just set out to read it all. The author seems to know where to begin with me- at absolute zero. I very much enjoy the sample paintings, some I like very much, and often, it’s been a surprise to see how they made this or that happen in their painting. Some I would just like to see on my own wall! It has not instantly made me an artist, but it showed me steps to take to movea picture from my head to the paper. The paper, printing and especially the ring binding are just right. I would buy this for a friend and am glad I bought it for myself!
I learned enough tips from this book that made the purchase price well-worth it. The only problem with 'bible' books is the wealth of info that I either already knew or disdain as techniques....but this is hardly the fault of the book. Picking up spotty educations on You Tube leave us all with gaps in our knowledge and too much of the same ideas on certain topics; this book certainly helped fill in the gaps. It has a great section on color-mixing for different skin types--I'd highly recommend it.
A must-have for any watercolorist, beginner or experienced. This book is remarkably well-written and easy to understand. It provides in-depth instruction of watercolor techniques and color theory, and how to implement the two into your paintings to create a strong and beautiful painting.I've been doing watercolor for about five years now, and this is by far one of the most helpful guide/instructional books I have found on the subject. I just wish I had discovered it sooner!
This has a lot of good information that I'm sure even an established artist could make good use of but it's basic enough for a novice like me to "get it." I liked how the materials like paper and such were explained. I never considered the importance of stretching paper/using a "block" of paper before, for example.I would recommend this book to anyone that's not sure where to start with watercolor.
Pretty happy overall as a beginner. It's useful to have a reference for different technique ideas, but I've found cross-referencing with youtube tutorials has been necessary to understand some of the techniques. Sometimes the descriptions can be a bit cursory. Worth it though!
There is quite a lot of information introduced, but nothing very thoroughly explored. The artwork and techniques are dated, from a time when every artist seemed to paint with burnt this or umber that. I often think of this as the muddy generation, those artists who learned how to paint during the sixties and seventies with entirely too many earth tones. If you like that style, then this book may be for you. Styles change as cultures change, and that style used to turn me off to watercolor full stop. I prefer gemstone colors, rich and vibrant. I shall continue my search. There are plenty of styles to be observed with any pinterest or youtube search, though of course you risk falling down the rabbit hole with that route of research.
This is a great handy book for reference of reading. Nice small size with spiral binding. Must have for any watercolorist! Lots of techniques, composition, lighting, landscapes, special effects.
