I just received this cookbook, so admittedly haven't yet had the opportunity to try out any of the recipes, but there are so many that sound both yummy AND doable, I'm looking forward to it. Wanted to weigh in anyway, though, because although I've not yet put the recipes to the test, the book itself is lovely. Gorgeous photos and heartfelt stories. It makes sense this book grew out of the author's blog, because there is a lot of "her" in it. It's touching and beautiful and almost made me want to move to Alaska (okay, not really, this CA girl isn't going anywhere), but it did make me want to visit. And certainly to try to cook up a taste of it.
Living in Alaska I have the salmon lovebug. Every year catching and eating the first salmon is exciting. I will eat it anyway it is prepared and I’m not picky.When you have a freezer full of salmon the excitement dies off. And I love salmon. I’m always looking for a new way to prepare salmon. I made Maya’s Salmon patties and my husband swooned about it. They were delicious.For that recipe alone I would give the cookbook five stars. The cookbook was easy to follow and had ingredients I could get ahold of here in Bush Alaska. Nothing is more frustrating than having to wait weeks for ingredients to arrive or complete lack of access.I really liked how she has the instructions broken down. It is not difficult to find the next step. I also enjoyed the pictures and the stories she’s included.I would and I have recommended this book to friends and family. If you are from Alaska, the lower 48, or somewhere else you will enjoy this book.
I love this cookbook! I was new to Alaska from Scratch, but purchased the cookbook on the recommendation of a friend. I have not been disappointed! I have already made two recipes after owning the book for less than a week. The Flatiron steak with asparagus and blue cheese, which my husband proclaimed "the best steak dinner I have ever had!" (And we have had many!) And the Kenai Cheeseburger. Oh....my. If you are looking for the first recipes to try from the cookbook, I highly recommend both! They were simple to make, but unbelievably delicious. We entertain a fair amount, and I can't wait to make both of them again for guests! Next I will try her chocolate chip banana bread, and I know it will be equally delicious. I cook a lot, I experiment with many different recipes and cookbooks, and I can tell you this one will be a favorite for a VERY long time.
When I found out there was going to be an Alaska from Scratch cookbook - I knew I needed it. This book is a hardcover with thick pages. The book is going to withstand all of the spills and splatters.I have made some foods from the blog and am super excited about making a meal from the cookbook. Like the Mac & cheese!
I love this book! It's honest and beautiful and full of delicious recipes that are easy weeknight meals for me. Wilson's writing is, as always, sincere and somehow familiar. I'll be looking forward to her memoir if she ever decides to write one.
This is a fun cookbook, and fits Alaska well (have lived in Alaska almost 4 decades). The photos catch the flavor, and the text spins the colorful life rooted in hard work and adaptation. The cooking with what you have, and making it special fits Alaska.Tomato soup for supper, but without the toasted cheese sandwich........
I received this cookbook recently and it is stunning. The stories are rich (I've been reading through this like a novel when I'm tucked into bed at night!) and the recipes are delicious and simple enough to tackle even with a full-time job and 7-month-old baby on my hip. The photos of food and Alaskan landscapes are so beautiful that I'm a little sad every time I spill recipe ingredients or smear greasy fingerprints on them, but such is life when you put a good cookbook to use!
I stumbled across the author's blog while searching for a recipe and I fell in love. I came straight to Amazon to preorder this book and was just as pleased with it as the recipes on her blog. The recipes use real food that isn't overly fussy or difficult to get your hands on. I love Ms. Wilson's ability to tell a story. Hands down one of my favorite cookbooks!
